On May 14th and 15th, I attended the 2013 Digital Summit in Atlanta, GA.  It is the largest digital marketing and strategies summit in the Southeast with over 1500 attendees converging on Atlanta. 

Alexis Ohanian - co-founder of Reddit was the keynote speaker the first afternoon.  The following are some brief nuggets he shared.  I found them to be very simple, yet very powerful thoughts on using social media, content creation, and connecting with your tribe.  Hope you enjoy them.

noun: a type of online community where users vote on content

verb: to take part in a reddit community

Your worst enemy is the back button.

The internet is a level playing field.  The world is not flat but, the internet is.

The following are simple concepts with big impact:

1. make something people want.

This would seem obvious, but think about it.

2. make something people love.

As soon as the "new thing" comes out your users are going to be using it to tell others about your stuff.

3. be human 

Act like you are still talking to other humans

4. thank the first people that like your page 

Especially the early adopters - need to thank them
ask for their home mailing address so you can send them stuff / note cards

5. give lots of "DAMN's"

Your competition probably doesn’t give a damn!
Wufoo writes personal thank you notes to paying customers.

6. don't have to spend a lot for advertising / marketing

Used stickers posted on subway in boston to generate buzz.

He likes mascots - Used the "hipmunk" in times square created spectacle and spread the news ($500)

7. be engaged with users and make them feel special.

be good - think long term.

more leverage going toward users.

entrepreneur is just french for “has ideas, does them.”

entire generation is looking at job market - on internet you can do it.

1. on twitter - offered $100 to followers for mothers day flowers
hrs - 10k submissions; 3 winners
biggest jump in users

2. ask for photos of people using your product - winner gets round of drinks.

3. AMA popular now - "Ask Me Anything" allows people to ask questions and get answers.
